From acclaimed playwright Brian Friel, this hauntingly lyrical play is about nothing less than language as the soul of a nation. In 1833, the British army campaigns to replace native Gaelic place names with English ones in an attempt to dominate by oppressing the local language. But when a British soldier falls in love with an Irish peasant girl and her country, the romance fuels an angry backlash from both sides. The Guardian calls it a “fusion of wistfulness, lyricism and linguistic ingenuity.”
