Cumberland County, PA – Looking for an adventure that will strengthen your horticultural skills and know-how? Beat the heat this summer by going to the Summer H.E.A.T. program, a new horticulture program designed just for teens. Join the Master Gardeners of Cumberland County for their Summer H.E.A.T. program on Wednesdays, June 14 and June 28, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Held at the Penn State Extension Office in Carlisle, this fun-filled program offers teens ages 12-15, or in grades 6-9, the ability to explore and discover horticulture at its best.
The first camp session on June 14 offers teens the opportunity to delve deeper into sustainability at Dickinson College, its gardens and greenhouse. Engage in hands-on learning about plant propagation techniques from starting seeds to taking stem cuttings as well as the layering and grafting of shrubs. Teens will construct their own leaf-casted garden ornament and experiment with soils. Come prepared for plenty of exploration, hands-on activities, and discussions.
The second camp session on June 28 features the opportunity to travel to and explore Bonnybrook Vineyard in Carlisle, learn how grapevines are grafted, and discover the process of grape production. Learn about honeybees, pollination, the fruit industry, apples, and how apple trees are grafted as we take a wagon tour at Hollabaugh Bros. in Biglerville. Understand the differences between conventional and organic growing, what I.P.M. is, and take a look at real working beehives too. Plus, you’ll be able to delve into the research behind fruit production and do some scouting for fruit tree insects and diseases at the Fruit Research and Extension Center (FREC) in Adams County. You won’t want to miss this summer event.
Registration is limited to 12 teens at each camp session and is required by Wednesday, June 7, 2017. The registration fee is $14.00 each day, or $28.00 for both days, with a discount offered for additional teens from the same family. Transportation between the Cumberland County Penn State Extension Office and organizations will be provided by Extension staff.
