(Harrisburg, PA) – The State Street Academy of Music (SSA) announces two concerts to kick off the ninth annual Sundays on State Street Concert Series. The concerts will be performed on Sunday, October 27, 2013 and Sunday, December 8, 2013. Both concerts begin at 4:00 p.m. and are open to the public with a requested $10 donation per person. All donations will benefit the Academy. The concerts will take place at the State Street Academy of Music, located at St. Lawrence Chapel, 110 State Street in downtown Harrisburg.

Essence of Joy
Essence of Joy – the prestigious choral ensemble from the Penn State University School of Music – kicks off the concert season. Organized in 1991, the popular choir, which includes both undergraduate and graduate Penn State students from many academic programs, will perform sacred and secular music from the African/African American traditions. Essence of Joy has performed throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, as well as the cities of Chicago, Atlanta, New York, and Washington, DC.

Messiah College Choral Ensembles
The State Street Academy of Music once again warmly welcomes the choral and brass ensembles of Messiah College to usher in the holiday spirit. Sure to inspire and delight, these student ensembles will feature sacred and secular holiday favorites performed with the beautiful backdrop and stunning acoustics of the St. Lawrence Chapel. This is a popular concert so you may want to arrive early.
State Street Academy of Music is a community-based, grassroots non-profit organization, with a culturally diverse student body. At present, 33 percent of the students receive partial scholarships. SSA provides an intensive music education program, which introduces children and teens to the wonders and joys of music, helps them develop their talent, and opens doors for them to new opportunities in education and life. The Academy offers individual lessons in voice, piano, stringed instruments, woodwinds, guitar, and harp, as well as the opportunity to participate in a choir. Visit www.ssamusic.org for information.
