The Gettysburg Foundation is pleased to welcome the public to this exciting program for Cyclorama painting lovers who long to go beyond the basics. Hosted by Licensed Battlefield Guide Chris Brenneman, Secrets of the Cyclorama, reveals many little known modifications to the historic painting and reviews the moods, attitudes and conditions that existed when the painting was created in the 1880s. The program takes place Saturday, September 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.
Brenneman kicks off the evening with a 30-minute presentation describing his dramatic findings while researching his latest book (with Sue Boardman and Bill Dowling), The Gettysburg Cyclorama: The Turning Point of the Civil War on Canvas.
Afterward, participants will view the Cyclorama and discuss some of the people and places that are visible in the painting. Brenneman will highlight areas where troops, generals and scenery were added in 1889. He will also share information about the historic “keys” created to help viewers interpret the painting. Visitors will see magnified views of the painting, and a question and answer period will take place after the discussion.
“It is our hope that the public will delight in seeing the painting with new eyes and walk away with a greater appreciation,” Brenneman said. Secrets of the Cyclorama is a perfect complement to the well-established, An Evening With the Painting, presentations led by Sue Boardman that discuss the history and conservation of the painting.
