Trailblazer Charlayne Hunter-Gault holds a place in Georgia civil rights history as the first black woman to attend the University of Georgia. An award-winning journalist with more than 40 years in the business, Hunter-Gault was a longtime national correspondent for PBS' The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and NPR's chief correspondent in Africa, an assignment for which she was awarded a Peabody Award in 1998. Her career has also included appointments with CNN, The New Yorker and The New York Times. She has been honored with two Emmy Awards and a total of three Peabody Awards, and received numerous honors from organizations such as the National Association of Black Journalists, American Women in Radio and Television, and Amnesty International. In 2014, she received the International Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum.
