During the event, Castro will share his experience creating positive changes in communities as a local and national figure, and how his faith influenced his passion for improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities he has served.
“Julian Castro's career and life have been driven by a desire and a passion for creating healthy and thriving communities both locally, as the mayor of San Antonio, Texas, and nationally as the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama,” said Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. “As we as an organization continue to focus on building healthier communities throughout Lancaster County, we are incredibly honored to bring a nationally- recognized figure to Lancaster to share his knowledge and experience in this area.”
Castro served under President Barack Obama as the 16th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 2014 to 2017. In this role and using a performance-driven approach to achieve the Department's mission of expanding opportunity for all Americans, Castro oversaw 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion.
Before serving as Secretary, Castro was Mayor of the City of San Antonio. During his tenure, he became known as a national leader in urban development. In March 2010, Castro was named to the World Economic Forum's list of Young Global Leaders. Later that year, Time Magazine placed him on its "40 under 40" list of rising stars in American politics. Previously, Castro served as a member of the San Antonio City Council and was known for becoming San Antonio's youngest councilman in 2001. He also became the first Hispanic to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012.
Tickets for the VIP dinner and lecture are $125 and general admission lecture-only tickets are $50. The VIP experience includes a reception beginning at 5 p.m. and dinner with former Secretary Castro beginning at 6 p.m. at Carr’s Restaurant. The VIP experience is limited to 75 attendees and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All proceeds from the ticket sales will support the programs and services provided by CHI St. Joseph Children's Health throughout the Lancaster community.
