Colloquium Speaker: "The Kitzmiller Trial: The Global Significance of a Local Event"
Neidig-Garber Science Center,Lebanon Valley Colleg N. College Avenue, Annville, Pennsylvania 17003
Ten years ago, a School District in South-Central Pennsylvania introduced a statement on intelligent design to be read to high school biology classes prior to the teaching of evolution. In Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District, U.S. Judge John Jones ruled the Dover Schools statement to be invalid under the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The Kitzmiller trial had world-wide media coverage in 2005. Today the status of evolution as a scientific theory in the public school curriculum continues to be of interest both locally and globally. Steve Fuller, an internationally well-regarded expert on the history and philosophy of science, testified in the trial as an expert witness for the school district. He is keen to explain his position and to consider the significance of the case after ten years. He recently reflected on the tenth anniversary of the Kitzmiller Trial.
