The theme: Combine a paint swatch, a mostly vacant building and champagne for a quirky, fun celebration. The Water Works wasn’t technically a venue. Blues and blacks, succulents and stones, and silver, gold and tawny hues helped transform it, superimposing it with a clean, classy tone.
The details: The industrial setting’s high ceilings made for dramatic photographs and unique pairings: lace and metal, bricks and bouquets, orchids and factory signs. Original vows and details, like late-night chocolate and strawberry milk sippies and mini-pies. Off-the-hook threads like Holland’s mermaid gown with covered buttons and cap sleeves (on for the wedding, off for the reception), a foofy flower girl dress with a furry cape, and the guys’ blue vests. The bridesmaids were cleverly creative with the only signpost they were given: the color blue.
The find: Although it wasn’t even close to his job title, water production supervisor John Holden cleared the cocktail area of palettes, chemicals and cobwebs and answered a million emails. (His new title: Unofficial Pre-wedding Planner?)
The proposal: When in Rome…right? Like sticking your hand inside a statue’s mouth, even if it’s 100 degrees and there’s a long line, because it was in Holland’s favorite movie Roman Holiday. Darryl handed off his camera, saying in halting Italian, “I'm going to ask her the big question of life...so take lots of pictures!”
The hitch: When they got to BWI, they discovered Darryl’s passport had expired. So, instead of heading to Antigua, they drove to DC to stand in line.
The serendipity: Darryl was against a cake, but Holland’s mom couldn’t imagine that. Enter Martine Cajas (of House of Clarendon and TV’s Dream Weddings), who created a bourbon-filled, rock climber-topped marvel.
The getaway: After staying at Lancaster Arts Hotel, they woke up that morning wanting to do everything all over again. Instead, they met out-of-towners for an impromptu brunch at Federal Tap House.
