With the holidays right around the corner (yes, right around the corner), it’s not only time to get our gift lists and wish lists ready, it’s also time to gear up for all of the holiday gatherings and meals filled with delicious food.
I have been known to indulge a time or two during the holiday season. I don’t necessarily go overboard at family gatherings, but I do enjoy all the food my family has prepared. Those are the times I wish elastic waist sweatpants were in style, or muumuus for that matter. Since they are not, and style is still at the top of my list, they are out of the question for my expanding waistline during holiday meals.
Lucky for us, there are several things that can be worn that are somewhat forgiving for those occasional meals you enjoy just a little too much (I should disclose that I am in no way condoning an unhealthy lifestyle, but hey, it’s OK to indulge every once in a while).
LEGGINGS
Let’s start with leggings. A lot of people are on the fence about leggings because they equate them to bed time, or lounging at home. Yes, you can wear them to bed (I have and do) but you can wear them as part of your outfit. If you invest in a good, thick pair (no one wants a pair you can see through) you are good to go. The key to wearing leggings the right way is to not treat them as though they are a pair of jeans or other similar pants. Because leggings aren’t so forgiving it’s best to cover your rear.
TUNICS
Not only are tunics on the looser side, their length is great, which allows them to pair well with leggings. They come in a variety of colors, materials and prints so you can always find one that suits your style. The tunic/legging combo is a roomy, yet put together look that will get you through turkey and mashed potatoes comfortably. Plus, you can find tunics just about anywhere. They are such a universal wardrobe staple that finding them is typically easy.
SHIFT DRESSES
Shift dresses are another alternative if you want to dress up a little bit more. While dressier, they aren’t form fitting, or figure hugging, giving you a little room to “grow” while savoring your meal. Since shift dresses don’t have a defined waist, it is important to make sure you find the right fit though; otherwise you can end up just looking frumpy. I personally love tunics because they are versatile and can be carried from season to season. I love wearing thicker tights and boots with them. Really though, I love shift dresses because I don’t feel as though I have to “suck in it” all the time when wearing one. Perfect for when I want to treat myself to a little pumpkin pie (with whipped cream) for dessert.
